Sometimes sleep training is actually not the most appropriate thing to be doing at a certain time, this is not usually a simple decision as a child needs to be very sick or not in a stable living environment for us to usually make this call, or in this situation when the parents are not ready.

Mum and Dads goal- to get a reasonable amount of sleep for everyone at night, get both girls self-settling and on the same nap schedule. Mum was cuddling Eden and Heidi to sleep then transferring them to their cots, where they would wake frequently overnight and having 2 bottles each. Sometimes they would return to sleep; otherwise mum would lie in the spare bed with them where they would go back to sleep.

Dummies are a great sleep prop early on – I have used a dummy for all 3 of my children in the early days and would have been lost without one.

Elliot was happiest cuddling up next to her Mum at night. However this worried Elliot’s Mum, because her daughter was nearly 5 years old and showing no signs of wanting to sleep in her own bed. Since Elliot’s parents had separated, the situation had become increasingly challenging. There was no consistency between the two households at bedtime and Elliot was getting mixed messages. Elliot knew that she was allowed to sleep in Dad’s bed every night, so she’d try to do the same when staying at Mum’s house. Initially, Elliot’s Mum tried to roll with it, but exhausted by having to go to work every day after a rough night of sleep, Elliot’s Mum eventually accepted that something needed to change.

As a parent I know the importance and sometimes elusiveness of sleep when it comes to children, and the range of feelings that come along with that situation!

George was born with a mild cows milk protein intolerance, he began breastfeeding but quickly developed a fussy feeding style, pulling off the breast frequently due to pain.

Milly was 12 months old, and after a rough start with lots of ear infections Milly got grommets at 11 months old – but the sleep associations had taken root and she had to held to sleep or Mum and Dad had to lie with her while she went to sleep.
